Overview:

The South Western Regional Planning Agency utilized a grant from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to develop a Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) Plan for the eight municipalities comprising the South Western Region. The purpose of the PDM Plan was to develop strategies that reduce the loss of life and property as a result of natural disasters. In addition, the plan fulfilled prerequisites necessary for federal and state mitigation implementation grants and disaster assistance.

The plan took into consideration the following natural disasters: floods; coastal storms and nor'easters; hurricanes; blizzards/severe winter storms/ice storms; drought; sea level rise; earthquakes; and dam failure. Each of these risks was evaluated for their likelihood of occurrence and potential for loss of life and property. To try to minimize these losses, the plan established mitigation goals, objectives and strategies that  minimize the negative consequences of natural disasters before they occur.

The PDM Plan was adopted by all participating municipalities, and FEMA approved the Plan on July 22, 2005.
