Overview
The purpose of this project is to conduct a strategic
assessment of new and/or enhanced opportunities for the implementation of
intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications in the South Western
Region, with a focus on improving the safety and efficiency of the regional
transportation network.
Primary project objectives are as follows:
- To educate federal, state and local policy-makers, as well as the
general public, about the role of ITS in transportation systems design
and the benefits of implementation
- To identify regional issues, concerns and conditions that the Connecticut
Department of Transportation should consider in its development of a
regional/state-wide ITS;
- To establish ITS program policies that provide a framework for local
and regional planning;
- To identify regional ITS program priorities and recommend specific
projects for implementation over a 20-year period;
- To identify institutional and other challenges to plan implementation
and propose strategies for meeting those challenges;
- To educate federal, state and local policy-makers, as well as the
general public, about the role of ITS in transportation systems design
and the benefits of implementation; and
- To actively involve federal, state and local stakeholders in the
development of the regional ITS plan.
- To develop a strategic ITS Plan for the South Western Region.
The Plan will be developed over a period of approximately 18 months.
The completed Plan will recommend short, medium and long-range ITS implementation
strategies, identify critical policy issues, support the regional ITS architecture
being developed by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT),
and position SWRPA to meet the national architecture requirements of both
the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration
(FTA).
Study Scope:
The study scope consists of the following six major tasks including:
